美药企污染药品或使脑膜炎爆发致64死

美国检察官办公室新闻发言人17日表示,马萨诸塞州一家联合制药企业14名员工当日早间被逮捕,因该制药企业生产的药物涉嫌导致2012年美国多州脑膜炎疫情爆发并致64人死亡。美国媒体称,这也是美国最严重的一起因药品污染被控的刑事案件。

这家名为新英格兰合成药物中心的制药企业由格里高里·科尼利亚罗和巴里·加顿于1998年创办,位于美国马萨诸塞州东部弗雷明汉镇。美国检察官办公室发言人克里斯蒂娜·斯特林说,17日早间,该制药企业包括两名创办人在内的14人被逮捕。

据美国媒体报道,该药厂生产的被污染的类固醇药物涉嫌导致2012年的脑膜炎疫情大爆发。在使用了该药企被污染的药物后,美国20个州的750人感染了脑膜炎和其他疾病,其中,密西根州、田纳西州和印第安纳州最为严重。

当时,美国有20个州超过750人患病,其中超过半数感染了一种罕见的真菌性脑膜炎,并导致64人死亡。据称,当时多数人是因背痛注射了该药厂生产的类固醇药物。

检察官称,这家“肮脏的”制药企业甚至没能遵守基本的卫生标准,而且员工早已知情。其中一些人甚至伪造记录。

在14名被告中,该企业联合创始人巴里·加顿和负有监管责任的药剂师格伦·亚当·陈(Glenn Adam Chin),被控使用过期原料,未能妥善消毒药物,没有经过测试以确保药物的纯净。其他被告被控罪名包括欺诈和销售假药等。

17日早间,格伦·亚当·陈在家中逮捕。此前有报道称,46岁的药剂师格伦·亚当·陈(又译陈葛南)为华裔,今年9月曾被指控邮寄诈骗,并遭警方逮捕,后被保释等待审理。

陈的律师斯蒂芬·韦茅斯称,对于陈被控二级谋杀罪表示震惊。并称,陈对所发生的一切,对造成的所有伤害和死亡感到深深的懊悔,但他绝不是要故意伤害谁。

美联社称,在数百个受害者和家庭提起诉讼后,该药厂已申请破产,并放弃了生产执照。
